After more than a century in unconscionable obscurity, Madeira is back. Once America’s most celebrated wine, Madeira went out of style after the War Between the States. But what goes around, comes around: Madeira has been rediscovered by wine-loving Americans, who are attracted to its history, its mesmerizing richness and perfume, and its unique longevity.

​No one has played a more important role in Madeira’s revival than The Rare Wine Co. In the mid-1990s we became the exclusive importer for two of the island’s preeminent houses, Barbeito and D’Oliveira. These relationships have not only allowed us to supply virtually every top restaurant in America with its finest Madeiras, they've also made possible the countless original RWC Madeiras, many of which have become iconic.

Even earlier, in the late 1980s, we became the indispensable source of old and rare Madeiras for collectors. And our importance to collectors may be even greater today. With Madeiras of questionable authenticity and quality now appearing regularly at auction, we uniquely have the deep knowledge to know wines that are likely to be of poor quality or even outright fakes.

And only The Rare Wine Co. can offer 100% unimpeachable provenance in what we sell. Every bottle of Madeira we offer has either come from our own library, or we’ve acquired it from the private collection of one of the prominent families on the island who originally made the wine.
